Hao Zhu Receives Amazon Research Award for Work on Datacenters

Hao Zhu

Texas ECE associate professor Hao Zhu has received an Amazon Research Award from the UT Austin-Amazon Science Hub for her work on “Building Capacity for Powering the AWS Datacenters and AI Workloads.”

This project aims to enhance the power capacity of AWS datacenters by modeling their interconnection with regional power grids.  To support large-scale AI workloads, the research also evaluates the deployment of co-located battery and other energy resources for effective power smoothing. Furthermore, the design of new collaborative mechanisms between AWS datacenters and electric utility providers will be explored to ensure mutually beneficial operations and improve the reliability of datacenters.

The UT Austin-Amazon Science Hub, launched in 2023, is a world-class partnership dedicated to advancing research in a variety of areas including information retrieval, machine learning and robotics. Together, we create an environment for local, regional, national and international participants to accelerate the advancement of science and solve challenges of societal and real-world impact.
