New Faculty Join Texas ECE

Texas ECE will welcome seven new faculty members for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 the academic years. They will join the eight tenure and tenure-track faculty who joined in 2019-2020.

 

Fall 2020

Hyeji Kim

Assistant Professor

Hyeji Kim joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2020.

Previously she served as a researcher at Samsung AI Research Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Before she joined Samsung AI Research, she worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2016 and 2013, respectively, and her B.S. degree with honors in Electrical Engineering from KAIST in 2011.

Her research interests include information theory, machine learning, and wireless communications. She is a recipient of the Stanford Graduate Fellowship and participant of the Rising Stars in EECS Workshop in 2015.

August Shi

Assistant Professor

August Shi joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2020.

His research interests are in software testing, and he is in particular interested in regression testing. August’s work focuses on how to make regression testing both (1) more reliable with respect to flaky tests and (2) faster without loss in quality of testing. His work on regression testing has received an ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award.

August obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2020. He obtained a B.S. in both Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2013.

Atlas Wang

Assistant Professor

Atlas Wang joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2020.

He was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, at the Texas A&M University, from 2017 to 2020. He received his Ph.D. degree in ECE from UIUC in 2016, advised by Professor Thomas S. Huang; and his bachelor degree in EEIS from USTC in 2012. Prof. Wang is broadly interested in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, optimization, and their interdisciplinary applications. His latest interests focus on automated machine learning (AutoML), learning-based optimization, machine learning robustness, and efficient deep learning. His research is gratefully supported by NSF, DARPA, ARL/ARO, as well as a few more industry and university grants. He has received many research awards and scholarships, including most recently an ARO Young Investigator award, an IBM faculty research award, an Amazon research award, a Young Faculty Fellow of TAMU, and four research competition prizes from CVPR/ICCV/ECCV.

 

Spring 2021

Shwetadwip Choudhury

Assistant Professor

Shwetadwip Chowdhury will join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Spring 2021.

His research interests are in developing next generation optical imaging technologies for applications in science and medicine. A key emphasis in his work is the joint design of novel optical imaging systems and advanced computational frameworks. This co-design of hardware and software enables imaging capabilities not possible in traditional optical imaging systems. 

Previously, he was a NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow at University of California Berkeley, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Before that, he received his Ph.D. and B.S. degrees from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University.

Ruochen Lu

Assistant Professor

Ruochen Lu will join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Spring 2021.

Ruochen Lu received the B.E. degree with honors in microelectronics from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2014, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana– Champaign, Urbana, IL, USA, in 2017 and 2019, respectively. His research interests include radio frequency microsystems and their applications for timing and signal processing. He received the Best Student Paper Awards at 2017 IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium, and 2018 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium. He is also a recipient of the 2015 Lam Graduate Award from the College of Engineering, UIUC, the 2017 Nick Holonyak, Jr. Graduate Research Award, the 2018 Nick Holonyak, Jr. Fellowship, and the 2019 Raj Mittra Outstanding Research Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC.

 
Fall 2021

Sandeep Chinchali

Assistant Professor

Sandeep Chinchali will join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2021.

His research interests include robotics, edge computing, and 5G networks.

Demetri Christodoulides

Professor

Demetrios Christodoulides will join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin as a Professor in Fall 2021.

He was previously the Cobb Family Endowed Chair and Pegasus Professor of Optics at CREOL-the College of Optics and Photonics of the University of Central Florida. He received his Ph.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1986 and he subsequently joined Bellcore as a post-doctoral fellow at Murray Hill. Between 1988 and 2002 he was with the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Lehigh University. His research interests include linear and nonlinear optical beam interactions, synthetic optical materials, optical solitons, and quantum electronics. He has authored and co-authored more than 450 papers. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society. In 2011 he received the R.W. Wood Prize of OSA and in 2018 the OSA Max Born Award.
