Prof. Robert Heath Gives 2017 Dean W. Lytle Lecture

Prof. Robert Heath, a Professor in Texas ECE, gave the 2017 Dean W. Lytle Lecture at the University of Washington Department of Electrical Engineering on Monday, October 2, 2017. The Dean W. Lytle Electrical Engineering Endowed Lecture Series is “a premiere annual event, featuring internationally-renowned researchers in the field of communications and signal processing.”

Prof. Heath delivered a talk titled “Millimeter Wave Communication: From Origins to Disruptive Applications.” In his talk, he reviewed the history and evolution of mmWave technology and proposed disruptive applications of mmWave to areas such as vehicular and aerial communications, wearable networks, robotics and factory automation.

Past speakers in the Dean Lytle Lecture Series have included academic and industry luminaries such as David Tse, A. Paulraj, Stephen Boyd, Alan Willsky, Ingrid Daubechies, Thomas Kailath, Irwin Jacobs, and Vince Poor.

Robert W. Heath Jr. received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He is a Cullen Trust for Higher Education Endowed Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is director of UT SAVES (http:///www.utsaves.org) and a member of the WNCG (http:///www.wncg.org). He is also the president and CEO of MIMO Wireless Inc. Heath is a recipient of the 2012 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper award, a 2013 IEEE Signal Processing Society best paper award, the 2014 EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing best ;paper award, the 2014 Journal of Communications and Networks best paper award, the 2016 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize, the 2016 IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award, and the 2017 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award. He received the 2017 EURASIP Technical Achievement award. His books include “Introduction to Wireless Digital Communication” (Prentice Hall; 2017), “Digital Wireless Communication: Physical Layer Exploration Lab Using the NI USRP” (National Technology and Science Press; 2012) and “Millimeter Wave Wireless Communications” (co-author; Prentice Hall; 2014). Heath is a licensed amateur radio operator, a private pilot, a registered professional engineer in Texas, and a Fellow of the IEEE.
