Prof. Neal Hall has been named a recipient of a 2014 Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Program (YIP) award. The award will fund Neal's proposed work on an underwater acoustic vector sensor offering a revolutionary leap in sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio, while at same time achieving small size. His approach is highly innovative and different from conventional sensing methods: it uses a diffraction-based optical interferometer to read inertial proof-mass vibrations with extreme displacement resolution.
According to the ONR press release, “A total of 24 YIP winners this year were selected from a competitive, diverse pool of nearly 280 candidates.”
