John joined Texas Instruments in 1981 in the NOR Flash Department. He worked his way from Productization Manager to co-managing the DRAM design department as a whole. TI’s memory business was then acquired in 1998 by Micron where John spent the majority of his professional career. At Micron, he held many senior titles, including the VP of DRAM Engineering and in 2019, Senior VP of DRAM and 3DXP Engineering. John retired from Micron in 2021. In 2022, John was called upon personally by President Hartzell and Dean Roger Bonnecaze to lead the Texas Institute for Electronics.

Dr. Torres-Verdín currently holds the Brian James Jennings Memorial Endowed Chair in Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering and the Zarrow Centennial Professorship in Petroleum Engineering, at the University of Texas at Austin Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.

Bob Metcalfe, professor emeritus in the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, was named the recipient of the 2022 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) A.M. Turing Award for the invention, standardization and commercialization of Ethernet.

The ACM A.M. Turing Award, often called the “Nobel Prize of computing,” includes a $1 million prize, with financial support provided by Google, Inc. The award is named for Alan M. Turing, the British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundations of computing.
